The Essential LA Artist Resource Directory

An evolving guide to the businesses and organizations that support artists

I've been collecting these resources for years. Every time an artist asks "Do you know a good framer?" or "Where can I apply for grants?" or "Is there anywhere to get affordable insurance?" - I add another name to the list. What started as a few contacts in my phone became this massive directory of everyone who actually gets what we do.

Here's what I've learned: the businesses and organizations on this list chose to work with artists. That's not nothing. They could serve anyone, but they specifically want to help people who make things for a living (often badly paid living). These framers understand why you need museum-quality work at emerging artist prices. These photographers know how to light sculpture.

Support begets support. When you hire the accountant who specializes in artist taxes, you're not just getting your books done - you're keeping alive someone who understands that our income is weird and seasonal and mostly comes from sources the IRS has never heard of. When you choose the framer who's patient about your weird dimensions, you're investing in someone who'll be there for the next artist with weird dimensions.

This isn't just feel-good community talk. Your creative career literally depends on these connections. The artist-friendly photographer who shoots your work well gets you into shows. The grant writer who knows the art world helps you fund your next project. The gallery that takes risks on emerging artists becomes where you have your breakthrough show.

I've organized everything by what you actually need - business stuff, creative services, places to show, places to make work. Some of these I've used myself (and I'll tell you when something's expensive but worth it). Others come recommended by artists whose judgment I trust. A few are research projects - places I haven't verified yet but that keep getting mentioned.
